Getting the Most Out of Your Mercury UV Lamps

Power and Heat: The Balancing Act
When you’re picking a lamp, it usually comes down to gas pressure and the wattage-to-length ratio. Here’s the thing: power density is what keeps your production line moving. If you’re dealing with thick films, you need those high-wattage tubes to get the job done. But there’s a catch. They runhot. If you crank up the wattage without upgrading your reflectors, you’re just throwing money away. Instead of getting UV photons, you’re just creating a lot of useless infrared heat.
What’s Under the Hood
We use high-purity fused quartz for the envelope. Why? Because it lets the UV rays fly right through instead of getting trapped in the glass. We also use tungsten-based electrodes. Production lines aren’t always a smooth ride—they start and stop constantly—and tungsten keeps the bulbs from burning out too early. We also handle the whole chain ourselves. The Reality of Running Them
Now, these aren’t instant-on lights. You’ve got to give them a bit of time to warm up before they hit full power. If you flip the switch and expect peak curing a second later, you’re going to be disappointed. And like everything in a factory, they wear down. As the mercury stabilizes and the electrodes age, the UV output dips. Keep a close eye on your hourly run-time. If you wait too long to replace the tubes, you’ll start seeing tacky surfaces on your parts, and that’s a headache nobody wants. Oh, and make sure your ventilation is dialed in—those lamps produce ozone, and you definitely want that cleared out of the room.
