Why Zonal Control Actually Works
If you blast the whole part with one temperature setting, you’re asking for trouble. Think about it: the thick sections need more juice, while the thin edges can overheat in a heartbeat. That difference is what causes the part to pull and warp as it cools down. By splitting the curing area into independent zones, you can dial in the heat exactly where it’s needed. The IR radiation goes straight into the resin, triggering that cross-linking process without scorching the surface. When the heat is balanced across the whole shape, those internal stresses just… vanish. You end up with a part that actually fits the specs.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Setup
Getting the dimensions right comes down to wattage and wavelength. For the fast stuff, shortwave IR is your best bet. But if you’ve got thicker resin pads, you’ll want medium-wave because it digs deeper into the material. We usually wire these up with independent PID controllers for every single zone so you have total control. But be careful with your power density. High-wattage lamps are great for speeding up your cycle times, but if the part sits there too long, you’ll burn it. I always suggest quartz-envelope lamps with specific coatings. It helps tune the emission to match exactly what the resin wants to absorb.
The Trade-offs (The Honest Part)
Look, this isn’t a “plug and play” magic trick. Zonal control makes your wiring and control cabinets a bit more crowded. You’re going to need more sensors and contactors than you would with a basic single-zone oven. And here’s the thing: distance is everything. If your jigging is sloppy, you’ll get hot spots. It’s as simple as that. Plus, those lamps put off a lot of heat.
